The quick answer: Amtrak gives travelers 65 and older 10% off the lowest available rail fare on most trains.

The details

Riders 65+ get 10% off the lowest available rail fare on most Amtrak routes; on cross-border services operated jointly with VIA Rail Canada, the discount starts at age 60. The discount applies to the rail fare only — it does not cover sleeping-accommodation charges or Business/First class upgrades, and it excludes the Auto Train and weekday Acela trains. It also may not combine with Saver Fares or other promotional discounts. Valid photo ID proving age is required at purchase and on board.

How to claim it

Select ‘Senior’ as the traveler type when booking on Amtrak.com or the app; the 10% discount applies automatically. (Qualifying age: 65+.)
